The benefits of using social media

Why should you use Social media? Simple: It’s fun!  But it’s not only fun, it has many pro’s as well. First of all, setting up an account is free and easy. You can do it in like 5 to 10 minutes. After that it’ll save you loads of time and money. For instance: you can save alot money on your phonebill, because you can make more use of messages via social media websites, than sending text messages. But the biggest benefit of using social media remains that you are in touch with other people, friends and family. The more people using social media, the more fun it gets.

There are many different social media websites. The most famous website in their category are Facebook, WordPress and Twitter. You also have country related social websites. Myspace for Americans. Hyves for Hollanders. (Note that these websites ar ein the same category of social media).

If you meet people in real life and having a talk with them, you sometimes know you’ll never see each other again. (Because you’re living far away from eachother, and both have your own life). That’s where Facebook or Hyves come in action. Add each other, know more about each other, chatting, etcetera.

My personal message to everyone without Facebook or (for dutch people) Hyves: create your account on it and see what it is. I’m sure you’ll like it in some way!

The dark side of the web

Nowadays internet is like, the old library, but bigger. You used to be able to find nearly everything you needed in terms of lecture in the library. But lecture is nowadays a very small part of the internet. People’s needs are improved, and so did the “new library”.

Though, there are many things you should be aware of if you are using the internet. The biggest worry is privacy. Companies do everything to get attention, and internet is one of the best ways to advertise. Since everyone is using the internet, companies can reach MANY people by using the internet. Google, worlds biggest search engine, saves everything you search for. The reason for that is because they can create specific adds for your needs. But there are people that find the storing of those things a violation on their privacy. (watch the movie for more info).

But privacy isn’t the only problem. The spread of viruses over the internet is quite big-scaled aswell. Some people create viruses with a reason. For instance: Pirating your bank details, company secrets, etc. There is also a group of people who create viruses because they want to indicate some kind of power.

Apart from viruses and privacy, you also have adult websites. Minors have access to nearly everything on the net. This is most of the time without supervision of parents. also, many adds on the internet are adult-adds. For instance, go to a torrent site and look at the sides of your screen. Both sides are fully covered with naked women.

My opinion on this whole subject is that I think most companies will threat my privacy with care, viruses can be prevented by safe use of the internet, and minors need more supervision by using the internet.

Twitter is a valuable tool for communication

Nowadays Twitter is a very valuable tool of communication; it’s the only (famous) tool for short-term communication available, and that’s what makes it special. Twittering is a combination of blogging and chatting (msn), and so is very specific. Many people dislike twitter because the (very specific) information which is found on twitter is most of the time rubbish to most people. People just don’t care what other people are doing at the moment, or what’s in other people’s heads.

Though, you can “follow” the people where you want the information of, which filters the information that you want, or not want. Let’s say: Your crush uses twitter. Most of the time you are very interested in how she/he lives, does, etcetera. Also, for the people who feel bored – and so – do care what other people do or think, twitter is a great time-wasting opportunity. I find Twitter a very valuable tool of communication since, I think, every sort of communication should be found, and Twitter is one of those that didn’t exist yet.

Chatting once started like Twitter aswell; people didn’t know what it was, what to expect of it, drawing quick conclusions. And nowadays, you see everyone msn-ing. I think that if Twitter gets a little boost of luck, it can become as great as msn is nowadays. See what happened to emailing, chatting, faxing, phoning, blogging; it all became big.
